NEWCIS at the London Marathon

Background

“My name is Emily and on 28 April 2019 I will be running the London Marathon for NEWCIS, a charity who essentially keep our unpaid carers, caring.

I joined NEWCIS as a trustee in 2017 and this has given me the opportunity to get to know a bit more about a caring role, a world I knew little about beforehand. I have also got to know the workforce at NEWCIS who are committed, experienced, and all motivated by one aim – to support carers.

NEWCIS are there to help keep those carers caring by providing support and guidance throughout their caring journey, and beyond.

I started running about four years ago and haven’t looked back. We are lucky in North Wales to have such a beautiful place to run around! It is a great opportunity to be running the London Marathon for NEWCIS; as I have become involved with the charity the more, I realise how valuable to service is, and how many lives it touches.”

"Thank you for your interest and support - whether you have donated, ran with me, handed out marathon tips or shared the word of NEWCIS - keep it coming!"

Emily's Journey

Sunday 3rd February

“The London Marathon training doesn’t stop in the snow! I’m running for NEWCIS – a charity supporting unpaid carers. Did you know that 3 in 5 of us will care for a loved one (if we’re not already)? Thank you for your support so far!”

Back from running in the dark testing out a new head torch!

Monday 18th February

“Below which recorded 37 miles last week after I ran the half marathon distance on Saturday. I ran in Llangollen along the canal which is flat – and long enough to get the mileage in! I got chatting to a lady afterwards and she was telling me that her husband had just had a diagnosis that would mean she too would be a carer shortly – it is amazing how many people around us are affected – I made sure she remembered NEWCIS!”

Monday 4th March

“This last week of running has been pretty tough – the mileage is now increasing in the week and this Wednesday I managed to go flying during my mid week long run. I am covered in bruises, luckily nobody saw me!

I did my long run on Saturday along the Llangollen canal – 15 miles… This is the longest I have ran during the plan so far. I would probably get a better time if I didn’t stop so often to take pictures (see below!) but it is so pretty in Llangollen its hard not to take in the views!

I am enjoying the training so far but it really is starting to feel like a challenge fitting the miles in around work and other commitments. I have lost some weight and generally feel pretty good – and the support I am getting by way of sponsorship and generally everyone routing for me is really helping to keep me going!

We are also gaining some interest in the Who Cares Miles challenge too – we have someone doing a sky dive, who will be counting some miles on his way down…! I think I would rather run!”

Sunday 17th March

“A tad wet in Wrexham today! This 20 mile race was a training run for the London Marathon!”
