“For us it started with a notice in the ‘Treuddyn News’. A meeting was being held in Leeswood for carers and as myself and my husband cared for our son who suffered from ME we decided to attend.
There were three of us at the first meeting and the two ladies who had organised the meeting explained they wished to start a support group in the Mold area. ‘The Carers’ were born!
Myself and my husband attended meetings in Mold and Denbigh often having demonstrations and speakers to listen to. It was at this time Claire and Carys were appointed at NEWCIS. With a grant now available for carers from the Welsh Government, we were able to apply for carer grants, attend aromatherapy sessions, chiropody and kinesiology which you could have in your own home. There was information and training on stress management, manual handling and financial advice too.
Carer strategy groups were formed and Claire and Carys attended in Flintshire, Denbighshire and Wrexham, as did my husband giving a voice on behalf of carers. Over the years more organisations attended and the work for carers grew and grew and we attended many sessions including the very popular Christmas parties!”
