What is a Young Adult Carer?

A Young Adult Carer is someone between the ages of 16 and 25 who looks after a family member. Caring for someone might involve things such as cooking, cleaning and other household tasks to taking responsibility for financial issues o supporting with medical issues. You may need to undertake personal care tasks or other things that your loved one can’t do for themselves. You ay have to offer emotional as well as practical support. A Young Adult Carer might look after someone because they’re unwell, have a disability, a mental health issue or struggle with substance misuse.

So how can we help?

If you are under 18 you can access support via the Young Carers team.

If you are 18 or over then support will be provided through both the NEWCIS service and Young Adult Carers service.

Groups & Events

We offer monthly YAC groups which typically run on a Saturday, but may occasionally change to a Wednesday evening in line with the availability of the activity that we are doing. Groups provide a chance to meet other carers who understand the impact a caring role can have, along with giving you the opportunity for a break from your responsibilities and time to recharge your batteries! Activities are chosen with the help of the group, and we aim to cover all the cost associated with the activities that we run. There will also be opportunities to access other events via the Young Carers team if you are under 18, and via Adult Carers team if you are 18 or over.

Where possible, try to register interest for sessions in advance. Below, you will find instructions on how to register an interest in sessions and what happens next.

1. Enter your details, tick which session(s) you would like to register interest for and click ‘book now’. These requests will then be sent through to the team and you will receive a confirmation email. *If anything crops up in the meantime which means you won’t be able to attend then please let us know asap*

2. A text will be sent out 2 weeks before the activity is due to happen to check if you are still able to attend.

Any issues please get in touch by contacting a member of the team 😊

Referring into the service

There are 2 different routes to refer into the service depending on your / the Young Adult Carers age.

Under 18

Referrals will need to be made using the online Young Carers referral form.

These will be dealt with by the Young Carers team directly. Once allocated one of the team will contact you.

Over 18

Referrals will need to be made using the NEWCIS online referral form.

This is because the adult team at NEWCIS will deal with the referral, undertake any assessments needed and provide support. You can find out more about NEWCIS services here.

Once you have been allocated to a worker to complete an assessment please ask them to forward your details to the Young Carer team, if you would like to access the group,  so that we can add you to our contact list.

Moving from Young Carers to Adult carers

Up to the age of 18 your support will come from the Young Carers team however once you reach 18 this will changeover to the adult team. We aim to make this transition as smooth as possible for you and one of the team will talk you through the process and changes that happen.  You can still access the YAC group it is just a change in how and where your day to day support comes from.
