NEWCIS welcomed carers to the Wynnstay Arms Hotel in Wrexham for the launch of the Carers Group for people caring for someone with dementia.

The room at the Wynnstay Arms Hotel was light and airy, and the carers received a warm welcome and enjoyed socialising from the start, chatting over tea and coffee. Kim Mason and Delyth Pridding from Wrexham Adult Social Care brought along their Seaside Reminiscence Pod (Rempod) to demonstrate how this can be used as a talking point to trigger happy memories and stimulate conversation and interaction -not to mention a fun photo opportunity.

"Thank you to the carers and staff who were able to join us at this extremely busy event with moments or great fun and emotion too."

We served a fish and chip lunch which went down very well, and to continue the theme Arty Cakes supplied a two tier seaside themed cake decorated with sugar sandcastle, shells, seahorses and mini flip-flops. The bottom tier was served as dessert, and the names were put into a hat for the winner to take home the top tier to share with the person they care for.

The lucky winner of the decorated top tier was Stephanie, but everyone was keen to take a slice home after tasting it with lunch.

After lunch the carers shared their ideas and suggestions with NEWCIS on consultation forms for activities, training and information to support wellbeing and their caring roles which they would like to include for future meetings of their new group, which will be held on the first Tuesday of each month. The venue will depend on the activity chosen for each session.

"The afternoon was an extremely successful event and all the carers said how much they enjoyed the afternoon. We look forward to seeing you again in the future."
